Racial Harmony Day (:
Singapore is a multi-racial country, and it is important for all the different races to live together harmoniously. Back in 1964, before Singapore was fully independent, racial riots caused significant destruction to the country. Conflicts between the Chinese and Malay group had resulted in violence and a disturbing state of unrest in the country. Innocent lives were lost, and many people were injured. Properties were also destroyed, and the country’s economy was affected severely. Everyone had to suffer just because of a fight between two racial groups. Thus, it is crucial to realize how important it is to maintain peace and harmony between different races.
Therefore, Racial Harmony Day is celebrated annually on 21 July in Singapore to commemorate the racial riots that took place back then. It is a constant reminder to all Singaporeans that harmony should always be maintained among racial groups so that history will not repeat itself. On this day, schools will organize activities to strengthen the bonds between students of different races. For instance, on that day, students may be allowed to wear traditional costumes to school. Stalls for traditional games of different racial groups such as five stones and congkat may also be set up. These activites will allow students to better understand and appreciate the cultures of other racial groups. This will hence lead to greater acceptance towards other races and invaluably promote racial harmony and social cohesion.
In conclusion, Racial Harmony Day is an important event that contributes to the social developments of Singapore. :D
